PAGE FOOTNOTES: Yes, the camera has 'flipped' to follow the orientation of their heads, since in Zero-P there is no actual "up" or "down" anymore. The grassy land is beneath them, as is the light from the sky inside the shaft. They are inside the middle of the P-Layer of the continent, and thus experience no pull.
The reason that the soil was so shallow, and the P-Layer so immediate is that the various companies that belong to the Morado family carted off most of the topsoil, to sell to other continents. When Cerul says 'scrape and rape' he means it, anything remotely valuable on this continent has been removed and used, or sold, or otherwise carted off.
As a side note, this continent actually belongs to Cerul, and not his father, Roxo gave the continent to Cerul for his birthday present when Cerul was only five; at the time the little boy thought it was really windy to own a whole continent, worthless or not. This is part of the reason that Cerul travels here at all...it has sentimental value to him; it reminds him of a time when his dad had time for him. On occasion, at least.
