PAGE FOOTNOTES:   I was always impressed by how Koko the gorilla, faced with a mysterious new food -which soon became her favorite, invented her own American Sign Language name for watermelon: "Drink Fruit" . Heliotrope, as she gradually encompasses the process of being human in the world, also invents her own words and descriptions...and tends to cling to them, even after being given the proper term. I think she is expressing an increasing individuation through this behavior.
